Living in Sarlat means living with the season. From June to September the centre belongs to visitors, parking is a sport and the restaurants are full. From November to March a good share of the old town is shuttered and the population that remains is older than the French average. That rhythm suits people buying a holiday home or planning to let, and suits full time residents less well unless they want to be part of the summer economy. Property is the most expensive in the Dordogne by a clear margin.

Daily shopping, schools, a hospital and a station with connections towards Bordeaux are all in town. Bergerac airport is about an hour west, Brive about an hour north east.

    Worth knowing before you offer

Much of the centre sits inside a protected perimeter, so exterior work needs approval from the architect of the Bâtiments de France. That can rule out the roof, window or shutter changes a renovation budget assumed.
