It is the practical choice in the Dordogne. Everything is here year round: hospital, lycées, a large weekly market, supermarkets on the edge of town and a restored old quarter that stays open through winter rather than shutting in October. Prices reflect that convenience only mildly, because Bergerac is a real town rather than a postcard, and the outskirts are ordinary in the way outskirts everywhere are. Buyers tend to split between townhouses in the old centre and stone houses in the villages five to fifteen minutes out.

Bergerac airport sits a few minutes east of the centre with seasonal flights to several UK airports. The station has direct trains to Bordeaux in about ninety minutes. Bordeaux itself is an hour and a half by road.

    Worth knowing before you offer

The town centre has old housing stock, and the cheapest townhouses are cheap for a reason: single glazing, damp, and electrics from another era. Budget for the survey and the renovation before the offer.
