Living in Périgueux

This is the least holiday-shaped town in the department and the most usable one. Trains run to Bordeaux and Limoges, the medical infrastructure is the best in the Dordogne, and the centre works in February as well as August. It is also the least picturesque of the well known Dordogne names, with post-war districts around a fine historic core. Buyers who want the river and the villages tend to look further south. Buyers who want to live in France rather than holiday in it often end up here.
Direct trains to Bordeaux take about eighty minutes. The A89 puts Bordeaux inside ninety minutes by road and Brive within an hour.
Worth knowing before you offer
Some central apartment buildings carry significant deferred maintenance and the co-ownership charges to match. Ask for the last three years of syndic accounts before committing.
