It is calmer and greener than the Dordogne valley towns, with fewer coach parties and a slower summer. The town keeps a market, restaurants along the water, a school and everyday shops, and the surrounding countryside is wooded and thinly populated. Prices are lower than the Périgord Noir for comparable stone houses, which is the main reason buyers who know the department look north.

Périgueux is about twenty five minutes south for the hospital, the station and larger shopping. Angoulême, on the Paris to Bordeaux high speed line, is about an hour north.

    Worth knowing before you offer

The island setting means riverside property and damp go together. Look hard at ground floors and ask what happens to the river in a wet winter.
