Is Provence practical to live in year-round?

    Short answer

Yes — Provence has excellent year-round infrastructure outside of peak tourist areas. The Luberon and Alpilles are genuinely liveable in winter. July and August are extremely crowded and hot in the most popular villages.

    In detail

Provence divides into distinct zones with very different year-round viability profiles.

    The Luberon villages

Gordes, Bonnieux, and Ménerbes attract massive summer tourism. In July and August, parking is impossible, restaurants require booking weeks ahead, and local services are overwhelmed. From November to March, some restaurants and shops close. However, the core commerce — boulangerie, pharmacy, médecin — stays open year-round in most towns. The quality of year-round life is high for those who accept the summer crowds.

    The Alpilles

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has strong year-round residential life, excellent markets, and services. Les Baux is more exclusively tourist-focused. Good TGV connections via Avignon TGV make the Alpilles practical for people who need regular access to Paris.

    The Var interior

The Haut-Var and Verdon area is less touristy than the coast or Luberon, and more affordable. Year-round life is genuinely rural — smaller villages, fewer English speakers. The Gorges du Verdon area is spectacular but remote.

    Transport and winter

Avignon TGV and Aix-en-Provence TGV give fast links to Paris at two hours forty-five and three hours respectively. Marseille-Provence airport is excellent. A car is essential for rural properties.

Provence winters are often sunny but cold at night. The mistral wind — which can blow for days — makes outdoor life uncomfortable. Stone properties with south-facing orientation and good shutters are much more comfortable than north-facing facades.
